Mechanism Failures

Despite our intelligence, there are times when our built-in defence mechanisms can fail us due to reckless behaviour. For example, not wearing a bicycle helmet despite knowing the consequences. 

A similarity between the helmet and the shell of a Red-Footed Tortoise is drawn, in that it would be silly for the tortoise to not take its own protection seriously.
